Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service

By • Sep 20th, 2008 • Category: Organisations

The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service offers a service to children and young people aged 0 – 19 years who have a wide range of communication and feeding/swallowing difficulties.

They have an open referral system for speech, language or communication difficulties. This means that any adult with concerns can refer the child to them.

Having received the referral they may seek further information to clarify the child’s difficulties and help them decide who will assess the child. They aim to see children within 18 weeks of receiving the referral and in many cases appointments are offered much earlier.

They assess children’s difficulties and provide advice and specific therapy programmes where needed. In order for children to make the most positive progress they work through other key people in the child’s life, those who can support development and change by using suggested strategies throughout the day and in different situations. These people are usually the child’s parents or carers as well as staff in pre-school settings or schools. They also provide training, either through demonstration and modelling or more formal training courses, to provide adults with the skills needed for this role.

The countywide service is organised into East and West teams although some staff work across the whole county.

The East team covers the areas of Wells, Street, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Frome, Bruton, Wincanton, Yeovil, Ilminster and Chard.

The West team covers Taunton, Wellington, Minehead, Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea and the Cheddar Valley.
