Mayor Opens New Taunton ASG Website

At 11am on Tuesday 30th September 2008, His Worship the Mayor of Taunton Deane, Councillor Tim Slattery, accompanied by the Mayoress, Mrs Gill Slattery, declared the new Taunton Autism Support Group website launched – and it went live!

The launch was attended by parents/carers and professionals involved in supporting individuals with children on the Autistic Spectrum. These included educational psychologists, social workers and carer support workers.

The website was designed and implemented by Mr Greg Kendall, of Kendall Internet with the assistance of Angela Smith of Taunton Autism Support Group. Mr Kendall has generously given his time and services for this good cause and the group are extremely grateful for his expertise in producing such an attractive, detailed and user-friendly site.

We are hopeful that we will receive many hits in the forthcoming weeks and months and that parents/carers, families and health professionals will find the site easy to access, positive and beneficial.

The concept behind the website followed from the development of the Taunton Autism Support Group.

This group was formed in 2006 when a need was identified for more support for parents/carers with children and young people on the Autistic Spectrum.

Initially, professionals were instrumental in setting up meetings. Subsequently, parents have predominately taken over with regular input from professionals such as social workers, carer support workers and educational psychologists.

We now have around 60 people registered but many of these parents/carers are unable to attend meetings for a variety of reasons. Consequently, it was felt that a website could expand existing contact by reaching many more people at a time and place convenient to them.

The website will enable us both to maintain links with members and provide links to services and other relevant groups and organisations. Additionally, it will provide general and local information and peer experience.

Eventually, we hope that the website will be able to act as a vital resource and point of reference for families with children and young people on the Autistic Spectrum in Taunton and surrounding areas, both at the point of diagnosis and beyond.
